Appreciation for fine timepieces ripens with the knowledge of the history of the great manufacturers, of which Audemars Piguet, A Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin rank at the top. The collection of books in this article contains some of the most famous names in horology and some of the most beautiful timepieces ever created. This article hopes to give an audience to these books that may not be familiar with them, thus we will take just a little peek at each book and some of the gems buried within their pages.

Audemars Piguet - Masterpieces of Classical Watchmaking
Gisbert L. Brunner, Christian Pfeiffer-Belli & Martin K. Wehrli
Second Edition Audemars Piguet Le Brassus/CH - 228 Pages - approimately US $180

A masterpiece of bookmaking, quite up to the task of displaying the masterpieces of watchmaking, Audemars Piguet - Masterpieces of Classical Watchmaking is a jewel of a pleasure, epitomizing the spirit of AP.

The book is made up of three sections: AP history, pocketwatches and wristwatches. The first section begins with a general history of Geneva watchmaking and watchmaking  in the Vallée de Joux and then concentrates on the history of Audemars Piguet & Cie, concluding with an AP movement index from 1950 through 1989.

The pocketwatch section consists of 100 pages, almost all in color, of perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, chronographs, jump hours and simple pocketwatches - a collection with few peers. The wristwatch sections boasts another 100 pages of wonderful AP timepieces, displaying the same range of complications and beauty found in the pocketwatch section.

A. Lange & Söhne - The Watchmakers of Dresden - Richard Meis
Antiquorum Editions - ISBN 2-940019-23-1 - 381 Pages - approximately US $180

My favorite of the books mentioned here, A Lange & Söhne - The Watchmakers of Dresden is a finely engineered history of German watchmaking. Beginning with Köhler, Schumann and Gutkaes and the foundations of watchmaking in Dresden, the book focuses on Ferdinand Adolph Lange, his company (past and present), his timepieces and his protégés, Schneider, Assman and Grossman.

A crafted blend of history, mechanics, and art, the Lange book has some of the most mesmerizing movement illustrations found in a book of this kind. Illustrations are not limited to Lange timepieces, featured are a variety of timepieces created by contemporaries of Lange.

The last section of the book contains the post-war history of the company and the re-establishment as Lange Uhren GmbH and features such timepieces as the Lange 1, Langematik and Saxonia. There is also an appendix of Lange registered designs and patents.

Breguet, Watchmakers Since 1775
The life and legacy of Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823)
Emmanuel Breguet
Alain de Gourcoff Paris - ISBN 2-909838-18-8 - 388 Pages - approximately US $200

Breguet, Watchmakers Since 1775 is a history of the House of Breguet and a biography of Abraham-Louis Breguet, ispso facto a biography of watchmaking. Over 500 colored and black & white reproductions of Brequet timepieces, drawings from the Breguet archive and historical portraits grace this wonderful book. Gazing upon the timepieces in this book makes one wonder if any manufacture can ever match the magic of this one man. From the invention of the ratchet key and the Breguet-overcoil to keyless winding to the wild and crazy faces, it is all here.

Three-hundred pages are devoted to the life and works of the senior Breguet and another 30 to his legacy (Antoine-Louis and Louis-Clement Brequet, the Brown Family etc.).

Appendices in the book include a genealogy of the Breguet family, a chronology of the Breguet manufacture and a list of all the illustrations in the book. A 30 page horological glossary is also found. Breguet, Watchmakers Since 1775 is available in French and in an English translation.
Patek Philippe Pocketwatches Vol I and Patek Philippe Wirstwatches Vol II
Martin Huber and Alan Banbery
Vol I - 292 Pages, 493 Black+White Illustrations, 188 Color Illustrations - approximately US $210
Vol II - 372 Pages, 417 Black+White Illustrations, 262 Color Ilustrations - approximately US $250

The reference reference - a pair of books as finely crafted and finished as any Calatrava, bound in Iris canvas, gilded top edges, a ribbon page marker in the Geneva colors - the atomic clock of watch books. Volume I was published in four separate editions, French, English, German and Italian - Volume II contains the French, English, German and Italian translations concurrently.

From the origins of the firm in the 1800s to the present day, Volume I covers the history, technical achievements and artistry of Patek Philippe and Cie, including a history of the modern stem-winding system, patented inventions of Adrien Philippe, patented designs of Patek Philippe, Tourbillons and Karrusels, complicated pockewatches such as Breguet's Maria Antoinette, Leroy's Montre ultra-compliquée and the Patek Calibre 89, a list of movement numbers from 1839 and 1971 and a parade of pocketwatches.

Volume II, again covers the history of Patek Philippe and Cie, then focuses on the wristwatch, including: a history of the wristwatch,  Patek Philippe's contribution to the development of the wristwatch, patents related to the wristwatch and a table of historic reference numbers. Of course the pictorial parade continues from Volume I; featuring sections on the sundry Patek wristwatch calibers from the simple movements to the world-timers, chronographs, perpetual calendars and minute repeaters.

Secrets of Vacheron Constantin - 250 Years of Continuous History
Catalogue of Watches Since 1755
Franco Cologni with Dominique Fléchon
Flammarion 2005 - ISBN 2-0803-0502-6 - 335 Pages - approximately US $100

Published in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the manufacture Vacheron Constantin the Secrets of Vacheron Constantin covers 250 years of the watchmaking and history of Vacheron Constantin. The book is divided into two sections: the story of Vacheron Constantin and the art and craftsmanship of Vacheron Constantin.

The first section is comprised of five chapters telling the manufacture's story from 1755 to the present: 1755-1899 CABINOTIERS, 1819-1890 ENCOUNTERS, 1890-1938 MODERN TIMES, 1938-1987 WINDS OF CHANGE and 1988-2005 NEW HORIZONS - almost 200 pages of story and horological art - the term art is certainly apropos with this book and of all the watch books I own the Secrets of Vacheron Constantin is most like an art catalogue.

The second section entitled The Watches of Vacheron Constantin: Art and Craftsmanship Since 1755 is subsetted into 4 chapters: 1. Watchmaker, 2. Casemaker, 3. Dial Maker and 4. Clockmaker. A lion's share of the photographs in these sections were specially taken for the book's publication - a quick glance will tell you that few companies today can boast of such a repertoire of miniature works of art and beauty. To the best of my knowledge the book is published in English, French, German and Italian.

The World of Vacheron Constantin - Carole Lambelet and Lorette Coen
Editions Scriptar SA 1992 - ISBN 2-88012-066-7 - 384 Pages - approximately US $190

The book least like the others described above, The World of Vacheron Constantin tells the story of Vacheron Constantin, the story interspersed amongst the pages of world history from the 18th century through the 20th century. The book is made up of three sections, namely, the world of Vacheron Constantin, the Vacheron Museum and the Vacheron Archives.

The first section is a 200 page compendium of sorts, of the history, politics, religion, philosophy, art, music and literature of the 18th, 19th and 20th century; complementing the historical stage set out in the book are a myriad of color and black & white illustrations of 18th, 19th and 20th century art, portraits, historical figures and places.

The Vacheron Museum section contains fifty-eight pages of Vacheron art, more than one-hundred color illustrations of the museum's treasures. The last section of the book contains one-hundred and twenty pages from the Vacheron Archives, featuring 2000 black and white illustrations of VC pocketwatches and wristwatches. The World of Vacheron Constantin was published in French, German, English, Italian and Spanish.

Summary

Though these books may take some sleuthing to possess, the rewards are well worth the hunt. If you are fortunate to own an Audemars Piguet, a Lange, a Breguet, a Patek or a Vacheron one of these books will help bring you closer to your timepiece; if you do not own an Audemars Piguet, a Lange, a Breguet, a Patek or a Vacheron these books may help you to come closer to ownership. If AP, Lange, Breguet, PP and VC are not your bag then these books are just plain enjoyable and a pleasure to own; if you appreciate beautiful timepieces you will appreciate these books.

Note: all the pocketwatch and wristwatch pictures in the article were scanned from the books discussed above.
